The Hands Behind
The Craft
The plaiting of natural fibres has been practised in Borneo for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The techniques and designs are passed down from generation to generation of craftmakers. Natural materials such as rattan, bimban, bamboo and palm leaves are collected from the Bornean rain forest and whittled down to be prepared for plaiting.
The crafts-women plait these fibres with their deft fingers, expertly interweaving the strands to create beautiful and intricate designs.
